Walking in Abraham’s Steps: The Power of Speaking God’s Promises as Reality

Faith is a journey that requires more than belief; it demands action rooted in the truth of God’s word. Abraham’s life offers a powerful example of walking by faith, especially in how he embraced God’s promises as if they were already fulfilled. This blog post explores the vital principle of speaking God’s promises as reality, a practice that can transform your spiritual walk and daily life.

Understanding the Foundation of Abraham’s Faith

Before Abraham could walk in faith, he understood three key truths about God:

  • God authored the Bible and it carries His authority

Scripture is not just a collection of stories; it is the inspired word of God. As 2 Peter 1:16-21 explains, the Bible is reliable and authoritative, guiding believers in truth.

  • God has unlimited power, including raising the dead

Abraham knew God’s power was limitless. This truth gave him confidence that God could fulfill promises no matter how impossible they seemed.

  • God calls things that do not exist as though they already do

This principle, found in Romans 4:17, reveals that God speaks of His promises as if they are already fulfilled. This is a key to understanding how Abraham walked by faith.

These truths formed the foundation for Abraham’s confident steps in faith. They show us that faith is not wishful thinking but a firm trust in God’s unchanging word.

The Meaning of Calling Things That Are Not as Though They Were

Romans 4:17 in the Amplified Bible says God “speaks of the nonexistent things that He has foretold and promised as if they already existed.” The King James Version puts it as “He calls those things that be not as though they were.” This means God treats His promises as present realities, even before we see them physically.

When God says something will happen, it is already true in His sight. This is not about ignoring reality but about trusting the eternal truth of God’s word over temporary circumstances.

Why Speaking God’s Promises Matters

Ephesians 5:1 encourages believers to imitate God. Since God speaks His promises as if they already exist, we are called to do the same. Speaking God’s promises aloud:

  • Strengthens your faith

Declaring God’s word helps you focus on His truth rather than your doubts or fears.

  • Aligns your heart and mind with God’s will

Speaking promises reminds you of God’s plan and keeps you hopeful.

  • Invokes God’s power in your life

Words have power. When you speak God’s promises, you activate His power to bring them to pass.

Some hesitate to speak promises because they feel it’s denying their current reality. This confusion comes from not understanding the difference between truth and fact.

Truth vs. Fact: A Key to Walking by Faith

  • Truth is unchangeable

Truth is absolute and eternal. For example, 2 + 2 will always equal 4. God’s word is truth (John 17:17) and cannot be altered.

  • Facts can change

Facts describe current reality but can shift over time. For example, it might be a fact that it is raining now, but that fact will change when the weather clears.

God’s promises are truth, not just facts. Even if your current situation looks different, God’s word remains true and will come to pass. Hebrews 6:18 reminds us that it is impossible for God to lie, so His promises are sure.

Practical Steps to Speak God’s Promises as Reality

  1. Find the promise in Scripture

Identify a promise that applies to your situation. For example, if you need peace, claim Philippians 4:7.

  1. Understand the promise fully

Read the context and meditate on what God is saying.

  2. Speak the promise aloud with confidence

Use present tense, as if it is already true. For example, say, “God’s peace guards my heart and mind right now.”

  1. Repeat regularly

Consistency helps build faith and renew your mind.

  2. Act in faith

Take steps that align with the promise, trusting God to fulfill it.

Examples from Abraham’s Life

Abraham’s faith was tested when God promised him descendants as numerous as the stars, even though he and Sarah were old and childless. Instead of doubting, Abraham:

  • Believed God’s promise as true

  • Spoke of the promise as if it were already fulfilled

  • Acted in faith by trusting God’s timing

Because Abraham called those things that were not as though they were, he became the father of many nations. His example shows us that faith involves speaking God’s promises and living in expectation.

Overcoming Doubt and Fear

Doubt often arises when facts seem to contradict God’s promises. To overcome this:

  • Remember God’s character and power

  • Focus on the unchanging truth of His word

  • Surround yourself with encouraging believers

  • Pray for increased faith and understanding

Faith grows when you consistently choose to believe God’s promises over your feelings or circumstances.
