The New Birth: God’s Answer to the Verdict of the Law
Part 3 of The Ten Commandments: God’s X-Ray of the Human Heart
“Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.” — John 3:7
The Law has spoken.
It has examined our thoughts, motives, words, desires, and actions.
It has exposed the roots of sin within the human heart.
It has declared that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
So what is God’s answer?
Does God merely tell us to try harder?
Does He command us to become more religious?
Does He simply forgive us and then leave us unchanged?
No.
God’s answer to the sinful condition of man is the miracle of the new birth.
Man Does Not Need Improvement Alone
Many people believe Christianity is mainly about self-improvement.
They think becoming a Christian means learning better habits, attending church more often, becoming more positive, or trying harder to obey moral rules.
But Jesus did not tell Nicodemus, “You need improvement.”
He said:
“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”— John 3:3
Nicodemus was already religious.
He was educated.
He knew Scripture.
He was respected as a teacher in Israel.
Yet Jesus told him that religion, knowledge, status, and outward morality were not enough.
He needed a new birth.
What Is the New Birth?
The new birth is a supernatural work of God in which a sinner receives spiritual life through faith in Jesus Christ.
It is not turning over a new leaf.
It is receiving a new life.
It is not simply adopting Christian beliefs.
It is becoming a new creation.
Paul writes:
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”— 2 Corinthians 5:17
The new birth changes our spiritual identity.
We were spiritually dead in sin, but God makes us alive in Christ.
“And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.”— Ephesians 2:1
The word “quickened” means made alive.
Christianity is not dead people learning better manners.
It is dead people receiving life.
The Law Reveals the Need for a New Heart
The Ten Commandments reveal why outward reform is not enough.
The commandments reach the heart.
They expose hatred beneath murder.
They expose lust beneath adultery.
They expose coveting beneath theft.
They expose pride beneath idolatry.
If sin were only an outward problem, outward rules might be sufficient.
But sin comes from within.
That is why God promised:
“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you.”— Ezekiel 36:26
God does not merely clean the outside.
He performs an inward transformation.
He removes the heart of stone and gives a heart that can respond to Him.
Forgiven and Recreated
The Gospel provides both pardon and transformation.
Through the blood of Jesus, our sins are forgiven.
Through the Spirit of God, our inner man is made alive.
Jesus does not merely cancel our criminal record.
He brings us into the family of God.
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God.”— John 1:12
Salvation includes a new standing before God and a new relationship with God.
The guilty become justified.
The condemned become accepted.
The lost become found.
The alienated become children.
The spiritually dead become alive.
New Desires Are Evidence of New Life
The new birth does not mean believers immediately become perfect in every action.
Christians still must renew their minds, resist temptation, and learn to walk in the Spirit.
But something fundamental changes within them.
A true believer no longer has the same relationship with sin.
Before the new birth, sin is part of the person’s natural course.
After the new birth, sin becomes a contradiction to the new nature God has placed within.
The believer may stumble, but he cannot remain comfortable in rebellion.
The Holy Spirit convicts him.
The Word corrects him.
His new heart desires God.
John writes:
“Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him.”— 1 John 3:9
This does not teach sinless perfection. It teaches that the person born of God cannot continue in sin as an unchanged pattern of life.
God’s seed is within him.
A new principle of life has begun.
The Holy Spirit Comes to Live Within
The new birth is inseparable from the work of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus said:
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”— John 3:6
Natural birth gives natural life.
Spiritual birth gives spiritual life.
At salvation, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within the believer.
He becomes the inward witness that we belong to God.
“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”— Romans 8:16
The believer is no longer left to live by human strength alone.
The Spirit teaches, convicts, empowers, guides, and produces the character of Christ within us.
From Law Written on Stone to Law Written on the Heart
Under the Old Covenant, the commandments were written on tablets of stone.
Under the New Covenant, God writes His laws upon the heart.
“I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts.”— Hebrews 8:10
This is one of the greatest wonders of salvation.
God does not simply stand outside commanding us to obey.
He comes to live within us and produces a desire for righteousness.
The Law tells us what holiness looks like.
The Spirit begins forming that holiness within the believer.
The same commandments that once condemned us now help describe the kind of life God is producing in us through grace.
We do not obey in order to become children of God.
We learn obedience because we have become children of God.
Grace Does Not Excuse Sin
Some people misunderstand grace as permission to continue living in rebellion.
Paul answered this directly:
“Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid.”— Romans 6:1–2
Grace does not merely forgive sin.
Grace breaks sin’s dominion.
The believer is no longer the helpless slave he once was.
“Sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.”— Romans 6:14
Grace teaches us to deny ungodliness and live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world.
True grace transforms.
The Fruit of the New Birth
When God gives new life, fruit begins to appear.
Not all fruit appears overnight, but there will be evidence of life.
The believer begins to develop:
Love for God
Hunger for Scripture
Conviction concerning sin
Love for other believers
Desire for holiness
Willingness to forgive
Compassion for the lost
A growing desire to obey Christ
These things do not earn salvation.
They reveal that salvation has taken place.
A living tree produces fruit because it is alive.
In the same way, good works flow from the new life God has created within us.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works.”— Ephesians 2:10
Have You Truly Been Born Again?
This is the question every person must answer.
Not:
Do you attend church?
Were you baptized as a child?
Do you believe God exists?
Did you repeat a prayer years ago?
The question is:
Has God made you alive?
Has there been repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ?
Have you passed from spiritual death into spiritual life?
Is there evidence of a new heart?
Scripture says:
“Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith.”— 2 Corinthians 13:5
This is not intended to produce hopelessness.
It is intended to lead us into honesty.
False assurance is dangerous.
But genuine salvation is available.
Come to Jesus Christ
The Ten Commandments reveal your guilt.
The cross reveals the price Jesus paid.
The resurrection reveals His victory over sin and death.
The new birth reveals what God wants to do inside you.
You do not have to remain trapped in your old identity.
You do not have to remain spiritually dead.
You do not have to clean yourself up before coming to Christ.
Come as you are, but understand that He loves you too much to leave you as you are.
Repent of your sin.
Turn away from self-rule.
Believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose again.
Receive Him as Lord.
Call upon His name.
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”— Romans 10:13
God is not offering you mere religion.
He is offering you life.
Final Word
The Law is the X-ray.
It reveals the disease.
The cross is the payment.
It satisfies justice.
The resurrection is the victory.
It proves Jesus is Lord.
The new birth is the miracle.
It transforms the sinner.
The Ten Commandments show us why we need more than moral improvement.
We need forgiveness.
We need righteousness.
We need a new heart.
We need Jesus Christ.
You do not merely need to become a better version of yourself.
You must be born again.
