Sometimes the Test Reveals What Is in Your Heart

There are seasons when God allows us to experience circumstances that reveal whether our confidence is truly in His Word. Deuteronomy 8:2 explains that God led Israel through the wilderness to humble and test them, revealing what was in their hearts and whether they would keep His commandments.

God already knew what was in their hearts. The wilderness brought it to the surface.

This is one of the purposes of testing: Will we continue acting on what God has already said when our circumstances do not seem to agree with it?

Deuteronomy 8:3 says that God “suffered thee to hunger.” That is a powerful statement. God was fully capable of providing food immediately, yet He temporarily allowed Israel to experience hunger because He was teaching them something greater than provision:

“Man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.” — Deuteronomy 8:3

The lesson was not merely about food. It was about what governs your life.

What If We Fed Our Spirits Like We Feed Our Bodies?

Imagine what would happen if believers fed their spirits as consistently as they feed their physical bodies.

We were created by the Word of God, and spiritually, we were made to live by that Word. There is a level of spiritual strength, wisdom, discernment, and effectiveness that we will never experience while living completely dominated by the natural realm.

The world constantly appeals to what Scripture calls “the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life” (1 John 2:16). When we become dominated by those things, we can lose awareness of spiritual realities.

It is almost like being plugged into The Matrix. Everything around you feels real and immediate, while a greater reality exists beyond what your physical senses can perceive.

When believers become completely governed by what they see, hear, taste, touch, and feel, they can make major decisions based on temporary desires rather than spiritual discernment. Relationships, sexuality, finances, opportunities, and life decisions can all be affected when immediate gratification becomes more influential than God's Word.

What looks enjoyable in the moment can carry consequences we never saw coming.

That is why believers must learn to live from a higher source of information.

You Cannot Live by Your Five Senses Alone

God was teaching Israel:

Your life cannot be governed merely by what you see, touch, taste, hear, and feel. You must live by the Word of God.

This becomes even more powerful when we realize that Deuteronomy 8:3 is the very Scripture Jesus quoted when Satan tempted Him in the wilderness.

In Matthew 4:4, Jesus answered:

“It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

Jesus demonstrated the lesson Israel had failed to learn.

Israel complained in the wilderness. Jesus quoted the Word in the wilderness.

The difference was not the wilderness.

The difference was their response to the wilderness.

Both encountered hunger. Both encountered testing. Both experienced circumstances that placed pressure upon their faith.

But Jesus showed us how the believer is supposed to respond when natural circumstances contradict spiritual truth:

“It is written.”

Jesus chose the written Word as His final authority.

The Wilderness Is Where You Practice What You Learned

Perhaps one of the greatest mistakes believers make is assuming that a difficult spiritual season means something has gone wrong.

But sometimes the wilderness is the classroom.

There are things you can learn while hearing the Word preached that you can only demonstrate when circumstances place pressure upon what you believe.

For generations, the Church has been taught about faith, confession, healing, authority, prayer, the Holy Spirit, and standing upon God's promises. Eventually there comes a time when we must practice what we have learned.

Faith cannot remain merely something we celebrate in a church service. It must become the way we live when the service is over.

That includes seasons when church itself may not feel the way it once did.

We must be careful about concluding that God is no longer moving simply because we do not see certain outward manifestations. Statements such as, “The anointing isn't there anymore because people aren't shouting, running, or responding like they used to,” can unintentionally reveal that we have begun measuring spiritual reality by natural evidence.

God's presence cannot be reduced to what our senses perceive.

Sometimes people are quiet because they are listening.

Sometimes they are drinking deeply from the Word.

Sometimes God is doing something profound internally that is not immediately visible externally.

Don't Measure God by What You See

This principle reaches far beyond church services.

If we determine whether God is present, faithful, or working solely by what we can see, we have already begun moving from faith into sense knowledge.

And once the flesh becomes the standard by which spiritual reality is measured, other works of the flesh can eventually begin creeping into our lives.

That progression can lead to compromise, disobedience, and eventually rebellion.

The answer is not to chase another feeling.

The answer is to return to the Word.

When you cannot see Him, trust His Word.

When you cannot feel Him, trust His Word.

When circumstances appear contradictory, trust His Word.

When the answer seems delayed, trust His Word.

When the wilderness becomes uncomfortable, remember:

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

The Difference Is Your Response

Israel teaches us that experiencing God's miracles does not automatically produce mature faith.

They saw the Red Sea open. They witnessed supernatural deliverance. They experienced divine provision. Yet when another test came, they often responded according to their circumstances rather than according to what God had already revealed.

Jesus entered His wilderness differently.

He answered temptation with Scripture.

He refused to allow hunger to dictate His obedience.

He refused to demand supernatural manifestations merely to prove God's presence.

He refused to exchange God's purpose for immediate gratification.

Again and again, His answer was:

“It is written.”

That must become the language of the mature believer.

The wilderness does not determine whether you succeed or fail.

Your response to the wilderness does.

God Is Watching Over His Word

We can trust God because He watches over His Word to perform it.

The silence of a season does not mean God has abandoned His promises. The absence of a feeling does not mean the absence of God. And the lack of visible evidence does not cancel what He has spoken.

There comes a point in spiritual maturity where we stop demanding that God continually prove Himself through what we can see and begin resting in what He has already said.

That is faith.

God's Word becomes our foundation when everything else is moving.

His Word becomes our light when circumstances seem dark.

His Word becomes our food when our spirits are hungry.

His Word becomes our answer when temptation comes.

And His Word becomes our confidence when God seems silent.

Live Your Life by the Word of God

The message is simple but life-changing:

Live your life by the Word of God.

Feed upon it.

Meditate upon it.

Speak it.

Believe it.

Obey it.

Stand upon it when circumstances agree with it—and stand upon it when circumstances appear to contradict it.

Do not allow your life to become dominated by what your five physical senses tell you. There is a spiritual reality greater than what you can presently see.

And above all, remember the words of Jesus:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life.” — John 14:6

Jesus Christ remains the answer. His Word remains true. And whether you can presently see God working or not, you can confidently trust that He is watching over His Word to perform it.
